16 items of beautification (srngara) and 12 types of ornaments (abharana)


In the Gopalottara-tapani, She is glorified as Gandharva. This daughter of Vrsabhanu has a very beautiful form and wears 16 items of beautification (srngara) and 12 types of ornaments (abharana).
Concerning Her sixteen items of beautification, Subala says to Sri Krsna, "After bathing, Sri Radhika 
  1. decorates the tip of Her nose with an effulgent jewel. 
  2. She dresses in blue clothing, 
  3. with a sash (nivibandhana) around Her waist. 
  4. Her hair is plaited and 
  5. She wears ornaments on Her ears. 
  6. Her limbs are smeared with camphor, musk and 
  7. Sandal paste. 
  8. She wears flowers in Her hair and 
  9. a garland around Her neck. 
  10. In Her hand She playfully carries a lotus flower. 
  11. In Her mouth She has tambula, and 
  12. on Her chin a dot of musk. 
  13. She wears kajjala around Her eyes and 
  14. on Her cheeks are muskpaintings of dolphins, etc. 
  15. The bottoms of Her lotus feet are painted red and 
  16. She wears tilaka on Her forehead."

Concerning Her twelve ornaments, Subala says, "Sri Radhika wears a 
  1. diamond on Her head, 
  2. golden earrings on Her ears, and 
  3. tiny golden bells around Her hips. 
  4. A golden locket hangs around Her neck. 
  5. She wears a cakri-salaka (an elaborate ornament that encircles the entire ear and fastens at the top) over Her ears, 
  6. bangles on Her hands, and a 
  7. necklace around Her throat. 
  8. There are rings on Her fingers and 
  9. a group of star-like necklaces on Her bosom. 
  10. She is adorned with jewelled armlets, 
  11. jewelled ankle bells and 
  12. radiant toe rings. 
She is very beautiful wearing these twelve ornaments."

Radha = (Ra + Ā) + (Dha + Ā.)


  1. Ra means that which expunges the sins of million (Koti = 10 million) births and prevents experiencing weal and woe (Subha Asubham) of Karma.
  2. Ā means that which rescues (the soul) from the cycle of birth death Old Age and disease.
  3. Dha means ensuring Eternity Knowledge Bliss.

"O Shree Krishna, Husband of Radha! Just as the gopīs worship You, the Ved mantras also worship You. By them, drink Som Ras."
vibhaktāraṁ havāmahe vasoschitrasya rādhasaḥ savitāraṁ nṛichaksasam (Ṛig Ved)
"O All-knowing Witness seated in everyone's hearts, who took Radha away from the gopīs (during the Mahārās)! We call You for our protection."
tvaṁ nṛichaksaṁ vṛiṣhabhānupoorvīḥ kṛiṣhṇāsvagne aruṣhovibhāhi (Ṛig Veda)
In this mantra, the name of Vrishabhanu, father of Radha is mentioned, leaving no scope for doubt or interpretation on what the word "Radha" means.
yasyā reṇuṁ pādayorviśhvabhartā dharate moordhnī (Atharva Vediya Rādhikopaniṣhad)
"Radha is that Entity, the dust of whose lotus feet the Master of the Universe places on His head."

sarvair gopi-ganaih sardham
girim govardhanam yayau
Sri Narada said: After enjoying water pastimes, handsome Lord Krishna went with the gopis to Govardhana Hill.

govardhane kandarayam
ratna-bhumyam harih svayam
rasam ca radhaya sardham
rasesvarya cakara ha
On Govardhana Hill, in a cave where the ground was made of jewels, Lord Krishna enjoyed a rasa dance with Radha, the queen of the rasa dance.

tatra simhasane ramye
tasthatuh pushpa-sankule
tadid-ghanav iva girau
radha-krishnau virejatuh
Sitting on a flower throne, Sri Sri Radha and Krishna shone like a monsoon cloud and lightning on the hill.

svaminyas tatra sringaram
cakruh sakhyo mudanvitah
srikhanda-kunkumadyais ca
yavakaguru-kajjalaih
There the happy gopi friends decorated their queen, Radha, with sandal, kunkuma, yavaka, aguru, and kajjala.

makarandaih kirti-sutam
samabhyarcya vidhanatah
dadau sri-yamuna sakshad
radhayai nupurany alam
The gopis worshiped Kirti's daughter Radha with offerings of honey. Sri Yamuna gave nupura anklets to Her.

manjira-bhushanam divyam
sri-ganga jahnu-nandini
sri-rama kinkini-jalam
haram sri-madhu-madhavi
Sri Ganga gave splendid manjira anklets, Sri Rama gave a network of tinkling ornaments, and Madhumadhavi gave a necklace.

candra-haram ca viraja
koti-candramalam subham
lalita kancuka-manim
visakha kantha-bhushanam
Viraja gave a beautiful candrakanta necklace splendid as millions of moons, Lalita gave a jewel bodice, and Visakha gave a neck ornament.

anguliyaka-ratnani
dadau candranana tada
ekadasi radhikayai
ratnadhyam kankana-dvayam
Candranana gave many jewel rings and Ekadasi gave to Radha two bracelets rich with many jewels.

bhuja-kankana-ratnani
satacandranana dadau
tasya madhumati sakshat
sphurad-ratnangada-dvayam
Satacandranana gave many jewel bhuja-kankana armlets, and Madhumati gave a pair of glittering angada armlets.

tatanka-yugalam bandi
kundale sukha-dayini
anandi ya sakhi mukhya
radhayai bhala-toranam
Bandi gave tatanka earrings, Sukhadayini gave kundala earrings, and the close friend Anandi gave a bhala-torana ornament to Radha.

padma sad-bhala-tilakam
bindum candrakala dadau
nasa-mauktikam alolam
dadau padmavati sati
Padma gave beautiful forehead-tilaka, Candrakala gave a bindu, and Padmavati gave a nose-pearl that moved to and fro.

bhala-pushpam manoharam
sri-radhayai dadau rajams
candrakanta sakhi subha
O king, Her beautiful friend Candrakanta gave Radha a charming bhalapushpa splendid as the rising sun.

Sundari gave a crest-jewel, Praharshini gave a braid-jewel, and Goddess Vrinda, the queen of Vrindavana, gave candra and surya ornaments glittering like ten million lightning flashes. Accompanied by brilliantly decorated Radha on the king of mountains, Lord Krishna shone with great glory. The place on Govardhana Hill where Radha was decorated is known as sringara-mandala. Then, accompanied by His beloved gopis, Lord Krishna went to the lake Candra-sarovara.

  1. Out of many thousands of gopis, 16,000 are prominent. 
  2. Out of these, 108 are important, and 
  3. Out of 108, eight are principal. 
  4. Out of eight gopis, Radharani and Candravali are chief, and 
  5. Out of these two Srimati Radharani is superior.
